Kinectynth:Experiencing the Magic of Photosynths with Gestures

POSTED IN Portfolio, Projects, Software

Photosynth is a software application from Microsoft Live Labs and the University of Washington that analyzes digital photographs and generates a three-dimensional model of the photos and a point cloud of a photographed object. The photosynth of an Indian Temple is shown below:

With the arrival of Kinect,Gesture Based Navigation has certainly become way easier than what it used to be.What impressed me more was the simplicity of the SDK provided by Primesense (the company which was taken over by Microsoft and made the original Kinect). It is well organized and one look at the sample programs and documentation is enough to understand their SDK.

The Working of Kinect is shown below (Image Courtesy:Nexgadget)

In the past couple of weeks,I combined PhotoSynth with a Kinect Controlled Camera System in OpenGL  to create a Gesture Based PhotoSynth Browser. The aim was to use Kinect to navigate the PhotoSynth.Below is a video of Kinectynth in action !

I have used the Kinect to control my Camera Class and OpenGL to render the Points .The Source Code and Binaries are available here .Sample Datasets are also provided.
